[IN) PRESENCE OF DISSAPEARANCE

Text written for the exhibition catalogue of Fanny Hellgren’s exhibition ‘Withering Postures’ at Nevven Gallery in Göteborg, Sweden, taking place from 12 December 2019 to 16 February 2020.

”Abstracted from falling apart, the paper pulps are turned into postures, but this is only a temporary pause (a pose) before their further transformation. Captured on their way to deterioration, on their way to disappearance, they elicit a sense of halt which is felt as a moment of silence and stillness; a moment of equilibrium that is registered as suspension of noise, movement, and thought. The kind of stilling and silence that Susan Sontag describes as “a metaphor for a cleansed, non-interfering vision,”[2] where not adding thoughts to the works signifies that they have been “rightly perceived,”[3] like a landscape might be. In this non-interfering encounter, the space for intuition is left open.”

Reconnecting Skin, Stone and Sky

ART MEMOIR BY EMMA CONSTANTINE.
Edited by Ira Ferris.

For her first solo exhibition, Body of Land, photo-media and performance artist Emma Constantine puts together a poignantly honest memoir of her journey into art, reflecting on tribulations on the path and describing little day-to-day rituals that keep her focused and persistent.

”I had to let go of the need for finished products. I had to believe that the process would get me somewhere. So I had to begin at the beginning. Then wherever you end up becomes another beginning.”

TAKING FUTURISM AND POLLOCK A STEP FURTHER

Text written for Tvrtko Buric Artist Catalogue (December 2015).

“A shattered human form advances through the space of a gallery, fiercely pushing through the ether while being remodelled by the tension of this pursuit. Tvrtko Buric‘s installation Post Human evokes the old Futurist dream of capturing the psychosomatic effect of the modern, progressive, accelerated age characterised by “universal dynamism”, a concept according to which objects in reality are never separate from one another or from their environment but interact and intersect with all that surrounds them.”

Eastern Thoughts

TRAVEL MEMOIR BY MARTA MAIA AND VITOR QUEIROZ.
Forward and Editing by Ira Ferris.

Eastern Thoughts is a poetic, philosophical, and tender reflection on the phenomenon of travelling. Writer Marta Maia and photographer Vitor Queiroz traverse 1708 km through Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand to bring us an inward contemplation on the feelings attached to journeying, the complexity (and complicity) of tourism, the meaning of home and belonging, our attachment to memory, and more. This book will be of interest to and a consolation for all those travellers at heart who constantly seek out for an embracing place, and are always a little bit homesick.

Produced as part of the Eastern Thoughts exhibition for 2017 Head on Photo Festival, Sydney.
