WHY DANCE MATTERS?

A text and a series of podcast-conversations commissioned by Critical Path and Delving into Dance for the 2020 Interchange Festival. Written and talked about during the Australian black summer 2019/2020 (when bushfires raged across Australia), the text asks why should we, and how could we, continue dancing.

ENTWINED

A site responsive dance, inspired and affected by the environment at The Corridor Project residency, Cowra NSW Australia. November 2020. The text I am reading is from Salome Voegelin's 'Listening to noise and silence: towards a philosophy of sound art'.

"The listener is entwined with the heard. His sense of the world and of himself is constituted in this bond.” Salome Voegelin

DANCING TO SILENCE

Dance and music commonly come hand in hand, but many professional dancers prefer dancing to silence. Why is that? An essay on (im)possibilities of improvisation. How can we escape the habitual patterns of movement and take our bodies in radically new direction? ~ read it here ~

“The process is forever doubtful, never a mute stability; as any movement should be. The dancer is learning how to lose the ground beneath their feet.”

CONVERSATION WITH WEI-ZEN HO

Performer WeiZen Ho speaks about her short dance film 'The Invisibles', screening as part of the 2021 Dance Lens Festival. We talk about: building the movement vocabulary around the area of uncertainty; process of working with a 'concept image' and the principles of the BodyWeather dance technique; working with VR camera and collaborating with film director Carlos Gomes and DOP Samuel James; combining animated sequences with the footage shot in nature; creating a binaural soundtrack with composer Gail Priest.

TOUCH IS THE MOTHER OF ALL SENSES

Curation of a group exhibition of five international artists whose works invite us to sense the world as a texture, through the skin - a tactile sensitivity that fosters kinship with the environment. Artists: Hannah Rose Carrol Harris, Anja Dimitrijevic, Thomas Thorby-Lister, Vitor Queiroz, Evgeny Vtorov. ~ details ~

DANCE AND DERRIDA

INBOX THEATRE

Hand to hand connection in the digital world. Embodiment as resistance to capitalism. ~ more about it ~

“We were protesting the mass-media idea of the event. In our view, the event is valid even if only a handful of people are its witnesses and in our case this handful was really just one single individual who does not stand outside and analyse the performance but is in the performance, or better to say, is the performance.”

THE MESSAGE

I’LL BE IN TOUCH : TOUCH / ONLINE

What becomes of ‘touch’ now that we have replaced the spaces of physical interaction with online gatherings? Can we ‘touch’ one another virtually, through distance? What type of experiences and physical sensations does online-ing enable (or disable)? ~ text for ADSR 008 ~

DANCE CINEMA

Conversations with the makers of dance films and videos, commissioned by Dance Cinema, an online platform for dance films and videos.

ATTENTIVE MOVEMENT & MULTI-SENSORY LISTENING

I am currently running classes designed to increase the spatio-somatic mindfulness. They are designed with the intention to bring the participants in touch with their bodies and their surrounding environment. A combination of movement, stillness and breathing. Every second Thursday at Alpha House Gallery.

CHOREOGRAPHING CINEMA (video essay)

If cinema is made of movement, then cinema is made of dance. To make a film is to choreograph it; because it is all bodies in space.
